On September 7, 1997, Jimmy Carter signed the Panama Canal Treaty and Neutrality treaty promising to give full control of the canal to the panamaninans by the year 2000.
It was finally turned over on December 31, 1999.

- Panama started to get all the income which boosted their economy a lot: Just so you get an idea of the amount of money Panama was gaining after the treaty: between 2011 and 2012 the canal made over 1.03 billion dollars of profit.
- Double the capacity of the Panama canal by adding a new lane of traffic. This allows larger ships to pass which means more products carried.
- Project was finished on June 26, 2016 and costed about 5 billion dollars.
